Greetings from STILL WATERS FARM AND GARDENS. During these long hot summer days, flower farming is in full swing and much like a football team, we run “two-a-days” with our harvesting. Our first harvest begins as the sun is just cresting over the horizon (or at least we hope to start that early, but usually after the first cup of coffee). We move through the different garden areas as quickly as we can, selecting greenery 🌿 and blooms 🌻 ready for harvesting. We cut, strip and hydrate each flower in a race to beat the increasing sunshine and heat. After we reach the top of the perspiration scale (at least 80% of our attire has been drenched), we head indoors to cool down, rehydrate and change our uniforms. When the heat of the day passes and the sun begins to descend below the tree line, we embark on the second harvest of the day. Much like the morning harvest, we end up soaked from the late day humidity and eagerly look forward to getting cleaned up. In the end, Summer days are just for a season and they pass quickly. On a final note, remember your local flower farms this month as July is American Grown Flowers Month.

Summer Bounty

July marks a peak season of blooms on our farm. All the fruits of the labor done in preparing the fields, planting, weeding and watering is now quite visible with an explosion of colors.  We have Celosia, Hydrangea, Lisianthus, Rudbeckia, Scabiosa, Sunflowers and Zinnias all in full bloom. Cosmos, Dahlias and Heirloom Mums are just starting to make their presence known too. As we walk by the fields, we reflect on the beauty of all these flowers, remembering the efforts invested and feeling grateful for the provision of the rain and sun that allowed these plants to flourish.

Edible Flowers 🌸

In addition to the specialty cut flowers, we also grow a collection of Edible flowers. Edible flowers make a lovely garnish for a dessert, salad, entrée or drink. In some cases, they may add a touch of flavor.  In the Spring, Bachelor Buttons, Dianthus and Snapdragons are the first group of edibles ready for harvesting. As these begin to slow down in production, the Summer Edible flowers become ready for harvesting – Carnations/Dianthus and more Snapdragons.  If you are looking to try some good ol’ Edible flowers, we have them available now through our online shop or you can visit Café Rule in Hickory, one of the fine dining establishments using our edible flowers.

American Grown Flowers Month – July

Since 2017, Congress has passed a resolution designating July "American Grown Flowers Month," recognizing the economic and cultural impact of America's cut flower and greens farmers. Every state across America is in season during the month of July, making it the perfect month to celebrate. Pictured is a recent custom designed arrangement in honor of American Flowers Week and American Grown Flowers Month.
