June 2021 Newsletter
Greetings from STILL WATERS FARM AND GARDENS!
The last two months have been some of the busiest for our farm. In addition to the normal springtime activities, we were blessed with an abundance of orders for Mother’s Day as well as providing florals for two weddings. As we enter June, our hardy annuals are producing well, the Dahlia’s are sprouting and the summer garden is planted out with a mix of flowers and vegetables. The days are getting warmer and longer which means getting out earlier for harvesting and then working later into the evening on other tasks. We hope you enjoy this edition of our Newsletter with updates from our farm and the latest seasonal offerings.

Weddings and Event Florals
In addition to growing specialty cut flowers for local designers and florists, we also provide Florals for Weddings and Events. Within this offering, we have different options where one can choose from an A La Carte menu of items or a Full Service with custom installations. In May, we provided florals for two weddings in beautiful North Carolina mountain venues. To learn more about our Wedding and Event Florals, please fill out a request form on our website.
Summer Garden Growing Well
Many hours of starting seeds in trays, watering them and keeping watch over them until they are ready to be planted out (or in our case, until we have the space prepared for them to be planted) have passed and now the seedlings are in the ground. Our summer garden has been planted out with both Flowers – Ageratum, Amaranth, Basil, Borage, Celosia, Cosmos, Gomphrena and Zinnias – and Vegetables – Eggplant, Cucumbers, Squash, Tomatoes, Peppers and Okra. We also direct seeded Cosmos, Sunflowers and Zinnias into the summer garden. Now we water, weed and wait until the garden is ready to bear its fruits.
Dahlia Beds
Our dahlia patch this year has been expanded from 10 rows into 16 rows. This expansion was kind of planned and unplanned at the same time. Over the winter, we began the process of preparing another planting area by covering with a silage tarp. The ground in this new planting area was tilled in the spring and ready for late spring/early summer planting, but we were not yet sure what was to be planted. As we began planting out the Dahlia’s in May, we got to the end of our existing planting area and realized we still had to plant out 2 more colors of Dahlia’s. At this point we assembled all hands on deck and quickly transformed the new planting area into an overflow Dahlia bed for the last 2 colors. This transformation included burning holes in 6 new rows of weed fabric, preparing each of the new rows with the necessary soil amendments and digging the holes for each of the little tubers. We are thankful for the provision of the extra space.
