Who is ready for some drier weather?  Like most of the country, we have been having a very wet winter. In some ways, this is a good situation to have because it forces us to take care of the many indoor projects that have been piling up like sorting seed packets, planning out future beds and ordering supplies for the year. But for a flower farm, too much rain is not a pleasant happening as it makes a muddy mess when trying to prepare fields and plant new trees and shrubs. Thankfully, we were blessed with a few days of warmer dry weather which allowed us the right conditions to complete some key winter tasks.  In this edition of our newsletter, you can read about our activities on the farm over the past month and learn about some of our current offerings.

Expanded Beds for Annuals and Perennial Flowers

One focus for us this Winter has been planning the layout of our farm, specifically the location of 2 future beds for planting annual and perennial flowers. When deciding on where to place a bed, many factors have to be considered like:

  • How much sun ☀ does an area get?

  • Does the terrain drain well?

  • Is the area within reach of our watering system?

In addition to these functional considerations, we also look for a location that visually seems right with respect to the other beds. Once we make a decision on the location, then comes the task of making the area square or rectangular shaped. Geometry and long tape measures are quite handy for this. With the beds marked, in comes the equipment to turn the soil and then the area is covered with a large silage tarp to use “Occultation” to kill the weeds. The 2 beds we prepared in February will be used for planting perennial flowers and summer annuals.

New Perennial Shrubs

Last Fall, we began researching and evaluating what type of perennial shrubs we should invest in. Fortunately we have a wonderful wholesale nursery not too far from our farm. So with clipboard in hand, we headed over to assess several different species, focusing on those that would produce the best floral and foliage offerings for our in-house design team. After carefully reviewing the available list of shrubs, we decided on the following group for our initial planting of perennials:  Red Gnome Dogwood, Hydrangeas, 3 varieties of Ilex, Perovskia (Russian Sage), Baptisia and 2 varieties of Spirea. Looking forward to seeing how these beautiful perennial shrubs mature over the next year.
